Beagles are the smallest of
the English Hounds and probably one of thee oldest breed of hounds that
hunt by scent.
Natural hunting instincts are
ever dormant in a Beagle so it needs only the right environment for
these to manifest themselves to some degree
(This
also applies to their pack hound instincts, you will become a member of
its pack.
Beagles have a very even
temperament showing no aggression or timidity. Their breed standard
calls for a “Merry” hound bold with great activity stamina and
determination.
Beagles are robust little
dogs free from any significant hereditary faults. Being bred to hunt
regularly over long periods of time means plenty
of regular exercise is necessary. Regular walks on a lead are important
both physically and mentally for a beagle.
Beagles require an escape
proof area to roam around in, as once they start scenting they are
blissfully unaware of most things happening around them. The words ‘road
sense’ have no meaning to a beagle.
Most beagles have an
insatiable appetite. They can be very greedy and persuasive when it
comes to food. It is very difficult to resist that appealing expression.
Be firm, resist, and do not over feed.
